THE GREENWAY / eco-tourism
On October 20th, 2006, the "Way of the Maramureș Legacy" was inaugurated, the first Greenway in Romania. Its starting point is the
Old Baths in Ocna Șugatag. It includes a specific area of the Gutin Mountains, where rural civilization is in harmony with nature, inviting
the traveller to step into a magical and
constantly surprising universe.
- the routes can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or cart
- the Greenway cuts across the Gutin Mountains, through fabulous landscapes, natural monuments, such as the Chendroii Pools, or the Rooster's Comb, mineral springs and sheepfolds where one can taste the unique shepherd's cuisine and drink real "palinca"
- in Breb, Budești, Desești and Hărnicești, the famous woodwork of Maramureș is represented by churches (2 of them as UNESCO monuments), old wooden houses, massive wooden gates, mills, whirlpools and plum brandy ("palinca") breweries.
- famous craftsmen can be seen at work; one can buy souvenirs from them, such as: wood-carved objects, hats specific to the Maramureș area, hand-woven towels or carpets painted with natural colours
- those who enjoy extreme sports can try rafting, mountain biking, climbing and gliding.
